confessions of a design geek, 2010 – 2017
I launched confessions of a design geek in April 2010 to discover, champion and inspire new designers. Within just five weeks of launch, it was nominated for mydeco’s Best Interior Design Blog in Great Britain award, which it went on to win. It was also awarded accolades and awards by Cision, The Sunday Times, Elle Deco Italia and Dwell US. Paul Tanner, senior buyer for Marks & Spencer said, “I check confessions of a design geek every lunchtime for inspiration and new talent.” Brad Ford of Brad Ford ID described it as “…beautifully designed, consistent, thoughtful and a very distinct point of view,” and William Shaw, then web editor of the London Design Festival said, “confessions of a design geek turns designers into real people. It allows designers to speak in the same words as the people who use what they’ve made. There is something very democratic about that.” Every year we awarded one new designer a bursary worth £10,000, which included a trade show stand, a photo shoot, mentoring and everything they needed to launch their brand right down to the business cards. “It kick started my career when I won two years ago,” said 2014 winner Fanny Shorter. "It was, and still is, an amazing thing to be part of.” I remain incredibly proud of everything we achieved with Design Geek and it was with a heavy heart that I wrote my last post in March 2017.
